Report: Celtics quickly shut down an offer for Gordon Hayward this summer

According to Yahoo Sports' Keith Smith, one NBA executive made a call to the Celtics this summer seeking a trade for Gordon Hayward. That request apparently was quickly turned down by Boston (per Sporting News' E. Jay Zarett):

Boston "quickly" shut down an inquiry this summer from an opposing team about potentially dealing for the 29-year-old forward, a rival executive recently told NBA insider Keith Smith at Summer League.



The executive that made the bid obviously felt that the Celtics would go into tank mode with the impending departure of Kyrie Irving, and possibly Al Horford. Both did end up leaving in free agency, but the exec doesn't know Danny very well. Ainge does not punt. He doesn't tank. Once again, per Keith Smith via Sporting News:

The executive told Smith:

"After it was clear Kyrie​ (Irving) was leaving, I told our owner that we could maybe grab Hayward for nothing if Boston tore it down. He's owed a lot of money, but only a couple of years left. We made a call, but it got shut down quickly. I think (general manager) Danny (Ainge) and (coach) Brad (Stevens) know what they have in Hayward for this year and going forward. He's going to be really good again."

Yes, that is my belief also - or at least my hope - that Gordon will return in September at close-to-100% of what he was in Utah. The unidentified NBA executive knocked on the door which barely opened before it was quickly shut. Danny and Brad are putting a lot of hope unto the coming season, as are we. Two months to training camp seems like a long time.

  Time to say "Goodbye" to Kitty's Restaurant - my   family's destination and tradition for six generations and more than 80 years. My memories of Kitty's go back to the early-1950's .
