Marcus Smart: A lesson in surviving and thriving by adapting to change

I could not have said it better myself. Adapting to change is critical for survival and maintaining quality of life.

What more does Marcus Smart have to do to gain more acceptance from fans? He has been Boston's main facilitator since the departure of Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker. He has seen the error of his ways and cut down the number of heaves-from-distance he attempts, and his assists are up.

His 9.9 field goal attempts per game this season are the lowest in the past three seasons, and since his return to action, he has only attempted an average of 6.5 shots per game over the last three games.. Also, in that same span, he has averaged 6.8 assists per game and a plus/minus of +23.3.

Red Auerbach said it. You can't make a shooter out of a non-shooter. Marcus' accuracy from range will never be all that great, but his skills, fire, desire and toughness fit this team like a glove

Quick question? How many field goal attempts and assists did 8-time NBA Champion K C Jones average over his career. The answer is 7.3 field goal attempts and 4.3 assists - and a career .387 field goal percentage.

Marcus Smart's main function, as with K C, is to often cover the oppositions top player, pick up the pace, light a fire under his teammates and get the ball to them. K C was not a shooter. He knew it and his coach knew it. Marcus realizes he is not an NBA marksman and is working hard to adapt his game to what benefits his team, which in the end should benefit the Celtics fortunes down the road.

In defense of Marcus Smart

Let me make it clear first of all that I am totally against making a threat of any kind that even hints at harming, or certainly killing, another human being. Marcus Smart was wrong in doing so in the Celtics loss to the tanking Oklahoma City Thunder , and he deserved the one-game suspension. But to be honest, part of me loved that it occurred. . This type of thing can happen when a player gets to a point "beyond frustration" and is having a bad game. Marcus and his teammates have been under-performing generally - were in the process of losing to a pathetic-and-tanking Thunder team - and Smart was having a bad game . And he let loose verbally at the closest target - an NBA official. Wilt Chamberlain did a similar act versus referee, Earl Strom when Wilt was having his usual tortuous time at the free throw line (per Chicago Tribune's Sam Smith): ''He was in one of those 1-for-13s,'' recalls referee Earl Strom. ''Nothing was getting close. S...
