If you don't like the forthcoming gun analogy, jump to the next paragraph. As a former cop, I realize why many police officers carry a second (backup) gun on duty. It is there in the event the primary weapon misfires, jams or runs out of ammo.
That is the Celtics' Al Horford. First of all, I don't consider the "Dominican Gentleman" as a backup - in the sense of a Celtics substitute - despite the media's habit of keeping him out of so many team photos. Al is vital to Boston's quest of Banner 19.
Horford is seventh on the team in minutes (27.6 MPG), and Kristaps Porzingis is barely ahead (6th place at 27.7 MPG). It's apparent that Joe Mazzulla is keeping "The Unicorn" (injury-prone) and "The Dominican" (38 years old) somewhat under wraps during the regular season. But Al's per-36-minute-stats are solid:
11.5 PPG - 7.0 RPG - 2.9 APG - .9 SPG - 1.2 BPG - .459 FG - .396 3s - .875 FT
My point is that I love having Horford on this season's team, and I would like to see him back for at least one more season, starting in 2025. He fits this Celtics team like a glove. A cop's backup gun can be a lifesaver for the officer and/or bystanders at a serious crime scene. Al Horford is primed and ready to take over - on offense and defense - in the event of injury, sluggish play by his comrades or just an "off" night for any of the Celtics stars.
Have I mentioned I love this guy?
